Gynaecological Conditions

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac present on or inside an ovary in the female reproductive system. Formation of an ovarian cyst is common among women during their childbearing phase which is between puberty and menopause. This condition is less common after menopause. Ovarian cysts are common in women with regular periods.

Symptoms:

  • Pain in the pelvis
  • Pressure symptoms (large cysts).
  • Indigestion (or) nausea.
  • Irregular menstrual periods.
  • Urge to defecate (or) difficult bowel movements.
  • Urge to urinate more frequently.
  • Feeling fall after eating small amount of food
  • Pain during sexual intercourse.

Types of Ovarian cyst: The most common types of ovarian cysts (called functional cysts) are Follicle cysts and Corpus Luteum cysts. The less common types (benign) of cysts are Endometriomas, Dermoids and Cystadenomas.

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. Also called leiomyomas or myomas. Uterine fibroids develop from the smooth muscular tissue of the uterus (myometrium). A single cell divides repeatedly, eventually creating a firm, rubbery mass distinct from nearby tissue. The growth patterns of uterine fibroids vary — they may grow slowly or rapidly, or they may remain the same size. Some fibroids go through growth spurts, and some may shrink on their own.

Many fibroids that have been present during pregnancy shrink or disappear after pregnancy, as the uterus goes back to a normal size.

Endometriosis is a disease in which endometrial cells that normally grow inside the uterus (endometrial cells) grow outside the uterus. Endometrial cells are the lining cells of the uterus and are cells that are shed each month during menstruation. Most often the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and tissue around the uterus are affected. Sometimes, though uncommon, appendix, bowel, or bladder are also affected. Endometriosis is one of the major reasons of infertility in women.

Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina that can result in discharge, itching and pain. The cause is usually a change in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria or an infection. Vaginitis can also result from reduced estrogen levels after menopause.

  • Family planning is the planning of when to have children, and the use of birth control and other techniques to implement such plans. Family planning is sometimes used as a synonym or euphemism for the use of birth control, however, it often includes a wide variety of methods, and practices that are not birth control. It is most usually applied to a female-male couple who wish to limit the number of children they have and/or to control the timing of pregnancy.

Menopause is defined as the absence of menstrual periods for 12 months. It is the time in a woman's life when the function of the ovaries ceases. The process of menopause does not occur overnight, but rather is a gradual process. The average age of menopause is 51 years old, but menopause may occur as early as the 30s or as late as the 60s. The age at which a woman starts having menstrual periods is not related to the age of menopause onset.

Studies show that high sperm fragmentation does not affect fertilization or embryo cleavage stages but affect the subsequent blastocyst development. It also significantly compromises the possibility of successful pregnancy in assisted conception treatment. Higher the DNA fragmentation, higher the chance of miscarriage. High sperm DNA fragmentation is also found in men with poor and normal semen parameters.

DNA fragmentation cannot be detected in the semen analysis, but there are many sperm DNA fragmentation tests available to assess the sperm at the molecular level.

Change in the lifestyle and treatment may help to reduce the levels of DNA fragmentation.

Cervical cancer is the no 1 cause of cancer related death amongst women in India. In India, more than 1,30,000 are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Cervical cancer is caused by a virus called Human papilloma virus (HPV). There are 100 known HPV types and 15 different types cause cancer and are classified as oncogenic. Four most common oncogenic HPV types are HPV 16, 18, 45 and 31.

To help young girls better comprehend the changes happening in their body as they are growing and address their gynaecological issues, Femiint Health provides adolescent gynaecological clinic.
